I've been sick since December 19th. Or maybe it all began December 16th when I passed out prior to vacuuming (which by the way is a totally cool trick to get your husband to do the vacuuming)At any rate, I have been out of routine laying in bed, praying for a day the Kardashians are not mentioned on television every 7 seconds.
So my dogs have been out of routine. The highly regimented pack has been in a state of chaos for some weeks now. Hence being creatures who love habit, they have gone into some type of bizarro land routine Alex has created where apparently there is no routine. To get a better understanding of what is going on with my carpets and disheveled looking hounds I took a glimpse into their diaries to get a first-paw account of what they really were thinking as I lay in bed wheezing...

Lily - - December 2011/Jan. 2012 - Thursday 7:45 a.m. ~

"DogMother continues to lay in sickness on the big bed and I have stood vigil never leaving her side. I stare at her adoringly, lick her fever ridden forehead and will only leave if forced by DogDad. I do not need food, I do not need water, I will only go out to potty if forced after staring at her for 8 hours. I will follow her to the bathroom in case she needs me and then recoil myself at her side again when we get back into bed. I don't want to play, do not talk to me, I just want her to be better and I am not moving until she is better."

"Where's the party? I'm the party. Oh, yeah."

Pogue - - December 2011/Jan. 2012 - Monday 4:05p.m. ~

"Dude! This has been the best 3 weeks ever! DogMom is like upstairs in a coma or something and never leaves her bed and I am totally downstairs and DogDad is in charge. There are NO RULES man! The doggy door NEVER closes, it's a blast! Nobody is constantly bugging me about my muddy paws, in fact DogDad doesn't even seem to notice them! I go on the couch with them and counter surf and there is none of that frantic flailing sign language that DogMom is always flashing in my face. I've been hitting the litter box for snacks and digging holes in the yard, it's been so gnarly. Sometimes I run upstairs to see if DogMom is breathing and she gets all cranky flashing that "no" sign because my paws are all muddy and apparently she minds if her bed is muddy which is ridiculous because the ENTIRE DOWNSTAIRS is muddy! Get with the program lady, MUD is where it's at. Lily is being a real kiss-ass staying up there with her, but that's okay, it's given me a chance to bond and teach Beatrix some really cool things like how to shred the family room chair! DogDad doesn't use measuring tools to pour our food out like that persnickety DogMom of ours and gives us pizza crusts! I hope DogMom never gets better!"

Beatrix - December 2011/Jan. 2012 Tuesday 6:25p.m.~

"What the hell is going on?

I haven't been to ballet or French lessons for weeks. I have some type of sap on my head from screwing with the Christmas Tree which Pogue said we had to do or Santa would not come. Nobody is cleaning the sap off my head. It's unsightly.

DogDad seems nice enough, he gives us whole cookies instead of pieces like DogMom does. But sometimes I tell him I have to go potty and he is watching the big big picture box and he'll say "in a minute". He does not understand I have a puppy bladder and I can't wait a minute. Shamefully I had to go potty in the laundry room on the throw rug in front of the door. I need therapy over this. For the love of God, I KNOW BETTER!

DogMom just lays upstairs oblivious to my life being ruined. I have been trying to get messages to OESR to save me from this mayhem that has become my life. Unfortunately, OESR President Susan England does not read and understand Swedish which I foolishly wrote all the emails in. I need culture and a good brushing. Somebody help me."

Colleen is a sweet nine year old female setter that we took out of that awful situation in Zanesville. She is very energetic and does not act her age. Since she was basically chained/kenneled outside and bred, she needs a loving home to help her learn how to just be a loved dog. She is very clingy, but its because she has no idea what is going on in her world. Can you be the person to help her? We need a loving foster home that is willing to provide a home for her as long as she needs it. She deserves a chance at living the life she has been deprived of.

Ohio English Setter Rescue is having a little contest for the best Easter Bunny/Setter photograph submitted. It only took 458 attempts to get a few non-blurry shots of my Pogue and Lily. Every obedient, Lily sits like a pro with bunny ears on, but her pesky baby brother Pogue wanted nothing more than to eat the ears off her head. Even though we repeatedly told him they were not chocolate. Sigh. All I have to say is THANK GOODNESS for digital. How in the world did us dog lovers ever get a decent photograph before then? It Takes A Village by Susan England - Head Bitch at OESR

Pulling a dog from a situation where it is in danger, and getting it to a foster home and then finding a forever home takes a lot of people. My friend Shannon reminded me of this when she wrote to me about all the things she was having to organize to get Henry ready to leave for his new forever family.

First you have the shelter workers/volunteers. They put the dog up on petfinder, post the dog all over facebook, and send emails out to rescues begging someone to take the dog because it's time is up. These are the people in the trenches, so to speak.

Once a rescue sees a dog they want to pull, then they in turn have to beg for fosters, contact everyone they know who might be willing to take a dog in, and plead the dogs case in order to find it a place to stay. If a foster home is found, then the transport person has to get involved to set up transportation from the shelter to wherever the dog is headed. When you are dealing with shelters out in very rural areas, this is easier said than done. This too involves contacting tons of people and spreading the word that a dog needs a ride, and someone to go and spring him from the shelter or wherever. Setting up a transport can involve several drivers. A typical one for us from shelter to Columbus is usually 3. We are now at 7 people involved in saving this dog.

Now the dog arrives. He goes to our vet to get examined and cared for. The vet techs, front desk people, and the vets themselves all have a part in caring for this dog. Then we pay the vet. This is possible because of the people who donated money to the rescue. Often we take the dog to the groomers as well if they are really a mess. Many times different volunteers will offer to taxi the dog to the vet or the groomer, if the foster is working and unable to do so. We are now at around 14 people minimum, who made a choice to help out a dog.

The dog stays at his foster home and learns how to trust and be a happy carefree dog again. Now we get an application. An application means that a volunteer has to call and talk to the person applying, check their references, and then discuss it with several other people in the rescue. If all goes well, we set up a home visit, which another volunteer does, which means finding someone in whatever area of the country they are in to take time out of their day and go to a complete strangers house to see if everything is as it should be. We are now at around 18 people who have had a hand in helping this dog. This is all assuming everything goes right. It usually doesn't. A foster home will call and say the dog isn't working and we have to move it when we have no room. A dog comes from the shelter and has cancer, or heartworm. Adopters get angry when they get turned down, because they thought it would be like walking into Petland, and that we would be grateful for anyone to take a dog. Fosters have issues and things that need addressed with their dogs, emotions run high, feelings get hurt, we have to try and find preventative meds for all the dogs without breaking the bank, people bail out at the last minute on plans. This all requires time, energy and manpower to deal with.

If the dog is approved to adopt, another transport must be set up to get the dog to his new home. Lets say it's an easy transport and only 3 more people offer to drive. Including the adopter, lets say there is only one, and not a family, we are now over 20 people.

20 people making an effort to help one dog on his journey to a better life. Each person just doing what they can, and giving what they are able to do. It does take a village, and many hands make the work light. This doesn't include the administrative things that have to get done. Maintaining the website and petfinder pages, taking calls from people regarding fostering and adopting, paying the bills, filing the contracts, and organizing educational seminars, and trying to find time for our own dogs. Every job is important, and every piece is crucial to the process. Do not ever think that because what you have to offer is small that it is unimportant. We need all the help we can get. Even if it just comes in the form of an encouraging word.

This Month's Creature Feature!

Duke and Ruger are Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs also affectionately known as “Swissies”. They are a multi-purpose working breed and back in Switzerland were used on farms from everything to carting milk to the market, herding livestock, and guarding the family farm. In current day there isn’t a need for the dogs to participate in the activities they were bred for, but many of the breed clubs encourage owners to have their Swissies participate in activities to allow the dogs to do what they were bred to do.

Duke, Ruger, and I have participated in various working activities and it is so neat to see the dogs try something new and just take to it because it’s in their genes. Lately Duke has been focusing in Drafting and Ruger has been busy packing. While we became involved in these activities because of the breed of our dogs, they are activities that any breed can participate in. Before participating it is very important to make sure that your dog is in good health and a proper age.

Drafting can be done for fun as well as attending trials for the dog to receive titles. With drafting, it is very important to start slow and get the dog used to the cart and make sure they are completely comfortable and confident around the cart. We start this by throwing treats in the cart and when they are doing great with getting treats out of the cart, we walk the dog next to the cart. When they are comfortable with that, that’s when you can finally hitch the dog to the cart. When the dog is first hitched to the cart it is important to make sure you don’t have the dog do tight turns, just make nice big circles and when they’re doing well you can start to make smaller circles. It’s also very important to make sure the cart and harness are the proper size and fit. Duke’s harness is from Wilczek Woodworks and his cart was made by my husband.

Packing is a great activity to do with dogs and it allows them to carry some of their own necessities. Like drafting, this activity can be done for fun but a dog can also receive titles for meeting certain criteria. We always start off with the dog wearing an empty pack for them to get used to it. Once they are comfortable with the empty pack we add a little weight to each side (and it’s important to keep the weight on each side as even as possible). Ruger absolutely loves packing and it is great exercise for her. Ruger’s pack is from Ruff Wear and it has held up very well.

It’s so wonderful to watch your dogs do something they love doing as well as being a great way to form an amazing bond between you and your dog. There are a lot of great references online and books in regards to both carting and packing.

You should all be happy to know that thanks to Shannon, Ruger has a collar that matches her pack (no more clashing) and Duke has one that matches his drafting harness! Thanks Shannon!

Oh Paw Plunger - we love you so. Especially after 22 inches of snow melts over 5 days and there appears to be no grass whatsoever in the back yard. I tried it all dear Friends of Fiona and let me tell you this baby rocks. Gone are the baby wipes, The Shamwow, and rolls of paper towels poised at the doggy door to keep muddy paws from invading indoors. You simply fill the Paw Plunger with warm soapy water and plunge. The massaging bristles inside take off the most caked on mud in one swipe. (maybe two if you have setters) The Paw Plunger comes in various sizes to accommodate any size paw. It comes with a lid to carry to the dog park or have in your vehicle post hike, it will save you from muddy paw madness. We got ours at In the Company of Dogs, but many specialty dog shops also carry this product and a quick internet search this morning found Amazon to have the best pricing.

* The Nell fabric FINALLY arrived. This style has been super popular and back ordered everywhere! Somehow it all got blamed on snow storms but we have the yardage IN STOCK!

* 1.5 & 2.0 hardware is SCARCE. It must be all this demand, but several manufacturers have been completely out of stock and THE COST has TRIPLED. Lucky Fiona is steadfast in buying collar hardware only from US sources and across the board the price has skyrocketed over the past 6 months. Our collar prices have been frozen for over 2 years, but I had to slightly raise the surcharge cost on 1.5 & 2.0 inch extra wide width options from $3 to $5. Please know I am making ZERO profit on these, but we love the look so much on the wider collars we want very much to continue offering them.

This gorgeous tags have met the setter challenge of

looking pristine on our Lucky Fiona collars after much rough and tumble play and the occasional puppy chomping. Snow It Goes

"It's as if you are in quicksand and the same final 15 seconds of tragically getting pulled under keeps replaying."

This is my description of this winter.

Sure it was all magical and beautiful in December. (see photo of Alex and I smiling like fools on Christmas Eve at the dog park as we enjoyed the first few inches) We still had the holiday trance going on back then. But here in the light of February you kind of see things how they really are...frozen. I can't fully see the cul-de-sac in front of my house, the snow pile blocks us in like a prison wall. Trips to the mailbox have become hazardous expeditions requiring full winter gear, a keen sense of balance and treaded shoes. Giant Evil Icicles have become Angry Birds ready to clonk you in the head the moment you try to escape the house for even a minute. The dogs are even over it. Sure it was fun running and sliding into the powder the first few times, but when DogDad had to snow blow the deck and part of the yard to even get out the door the snow became less frolic worthy. It's hard to frolic in 20 plus inches with a frozen layer on top, it just is. The back yard which previously hosted hours of ball playing and romping as been diminished to a 6X8 trampled potty patch. No magic there folks. Just some hard yellow snow. Sigh.

If the non-stop snow and ice are not enough to keep you housebound, don't forget the arctic air! I mean how are you supposed to even get out of bed when the day time high in Chicagoland is 6 degrees? Don't forget the wind chill that make it feel like -21! Thank goodness for bones and chew toys. I see the dogs systematically gnaw away to get some energy spent and I wish there was a human equivalent. So far I bake, and that does not bode well for how my jeans are fitting.

Am I getting old? Or I am just really cold? The Winter Wonderlands of my youth don't seem so appealing anymore. All I do know is I wish I could fast forward the rest of this month and have March be here already. How will you find me? I'll be the crazy lady in the deep thaw chewing on a Kong toy counting the days till I can check the mail in flip flops again.

Dugan Does Not Care if Santa is Watching...

Perhaps Dugan is jealous of Pogue the puppy and Alex and I constantly taking photos of him and his deaf-puppy hijinks. Today Dugan made it clear who the original "bad ass setter" is around this house. While we ran to the bank and Sam's Club for a mere 35 minutes Dugan broke into the studio where some boxes all neatly wrapped and taped up on my wrapping table were awaiting a trip to the post office. He picked the one that had something edible and delicious in it and carefully opened it and helped himself. I am thankful the non-edible contents remained untouched, but as a nice little "don't forget the old guy can still make trouble" touch Dugan ate the Christmas card that had a heart felt message to the recipients in it.
He may be grey around the muzzle, he may be stiff in the morning, he may forget how to come back inside once out the doggie door, but Dugan still has it. He obviously does not care if Santa is watching. We get it Dugan...sigh.

"Hold the phone! This white stuff is in a bowl so it must mean I can eat it! That's it! EAT ALL THE SNOW! This is awesome! I'm going to eat it and eat some more and wait...more is falling! I'll eat that too! In the air! As it falls! This is incredible! Stuff I can eat in the yard that DogDom & DogDad are not giving me "No" or "Drop it" hand signals for! What a lucky day! This is incredible, but enough chit-chat, back to eating snow! Yahoooo!"

"Holy crow...you can run in this stuff! Lily showed me how and the next thing I knew we were running and sliding in snow and oh my gosh, there wasn't even time to eat any we were having so much fun!

Then I said to Lily "Hey - wouldn't it be fun to take DogMom's couch blanket through the doggie door and play with it in the snow!!!" Lily said "No, no, that would be wrong and I'm not comfortable with the idea." But I was all like "Don't be such a fraidy-cat Lily! I'm doing it!" Plus it was so cool to whip it around and it made a great tug-o-war toy and really all it was doing was just draping over the arm of a couch serving no purpose whatsoever. Obviously this is a snow toy that we simply were waiting for snow to play with. Yippee! I love snow."

Leftover Turkey Hash Recipe for Dogs

Leftover Thanksgiving Hash

Makes 3 cups Prep 10 min | Cook 5 min

Ingredients:

1 sweet potato, peeled and coarsely chopped

1/2 cup leftover skinless roast turkey meat, shredded

1/2 cup leftover stuffing or 1 piece toast, coarsely chopped

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh sage

2 tablespoons prepared cranberry sauce

Directions: * In a small pot of boiling, salted water, cook the sweet potato until tender, about 5 minutes. Drain and let cool. * In a mixing bowl, stir together the sweet potato, turkey, stuffing and sage. Top with the cranberry sauce and serve.

Pogue, Puke & Being Humbled by an 8 month old English Setter

Dogs have a way of humbling us. What a wonderful gift! I was reminded of this life lesson this weekend when presented with our deaf dog Pogue's first foray into induced vomiting. What is it with these male setters? I have lived with setters for 15 years and none of my girls have EVER had the dreaded peroxide syringe forced down their throat after ingesting something they shouldn't. My first Irish Setter Seamus had the infamous pan of dark chocolate brownies 10 minutes before we were leaving for a dinner party where we were responsible for bringing dessert. Dugan, well, those who read this blog know Dugan's track record of eating things he shouldn't is variety at it's best. In 11 years with us he's ingested everything from a giant sized Toblerone, a bag of whole wheat flour, a canister of multivitamins and my personal favorite 17 Peanut Butter & Chocolate Power Bars ingested in 10 minutes by opening the pantry door and seeing what looked good while I leash trained Caelan in our cul-de-sac for 10 FREAKIN' MINUTES. One golden wrapper of said Power Bar is stapled to the front of his vet record file as a reminder to us all not to shop at Costco in bulk for protein bars.

I swear I could see a look of pride in Dugan's eyes as he passed the forced-vomit-40cc- syringe- torch down to his young protege this past Saturday night.

Dugan and Pogue had a tag team effort going on. While I ran upstairs to get dressed and ready to go to a charity volunteer event that Alex is chairing for his company they made their move. Alex was in the shower and let's face it, he is not the most vigilant in thwarting deviant behavior anyway. (flashback last week - "Oh, I didn't know the dogs weren't supposed to chew your flip-flops? I thought they were toys. They are they same color as that one toy they have.") Dugan took the lead and popped open the child lock on the cabinet under the sink that houses the garbage can. I imagine he gave Pogue the paws-up sign that I move slow coming down stairs due to bad knee so let's get going! Dugan wasted no time eating old pizza crust and Pogue found gold...or I should say silver in the form of an aluminum Philadelphia cream cheese wrapper left over from that morning's bagels. You know those damn wrappers hold onto cream cheese for dear life so you always throw them out with creamy cheese goodness still there. Pogue had found his treasure.

Caelan meanwhile, our tattle tale female Irish Setter started her "shrieky bark" which she only uses when another dog is doing something they shouldn't like harassing a cat. My ears immediately alerted to this distinct bark, which by the way would have sounded like any other bark to my husband. I sprinted downstairs, okay well, I hobbled really, really fast to see Pogue chomping away at the wrapper and garbage all over the kitchen floor. I did the "no" sign, I did the "naughty" hand sign, I even did the karate chop "Stop it right now I'm totally serious about it" sign. Pogue stood poised and ready for flight out the doggie door, slurping and chomping foil wrapper. I took one step towards him and he flew out the door into the back yard.

I followed in a great looking ensemble of a shirt, no pants and garden clogs I keep at the back door. (did I mention I was getting dressed earlier?) Thankful for our privacy fence and fearful GoogleEarth satellites may be capturing this moment in time I played catch me if you can with Pogue. He gave me one final chase on and off the deck before swallowing the wrapper whole. Shit. Intestinal blockage on a Saturday. E-Vet is $100 to walk in the door to make my dog puke.

My husband, fully clothed and ready to leave came upon the scene of me swearing my head off in the powder room with Pogue on a leash, while looking for non-expired peroxide. Dugan by the way cleared off anything edible from the garbage mess and was laying in the living room like "I did nothing. You can't prove anything."

Believe it or not the humbling had not even begun.

Seamus would take the peroxide like a kid swallowing nasty cough medicine, he didn't like it, but he didn't fight it. Our dear Dugan actually sits outside like a good patient when you force the peroxide down his throat. Is this because he is such a veteran? I don't know. But he does and I guess I took this for granted as little Pogue was having nothing of it. 35 minutes of my 6 foot 1 husband and my so-called years of "animal skills" and that little bastard Pogue evaded every effort in getting peroxide into him. 37 pounds of wily puppy that contorted himself like a Cirque de Soleil performer to avoid that syringe in his throat. Alex and I were covered in peroxide from failed attempts leaving bleached out marks on our clothes as mementos forevermore. I may have unintentionally highlighted some of my hair as well.

We attempted to mask the syringe with canned pumpkin, tripe, peanut butter and in sheer desperation ice cream. Pogue saw through it all and clamped his jaw shut like a vice the moment the peroxide hit his mouth. As the minutes ticked by the profanities increased as Alex was the one setting up the booth at the event and we were supposed to leave already and now he was covered in sticky ice cream, smelly tripe and as a final "F-You" he stepped in doggie doo.

Alex went to change his shoes and I had a "come to Jesus moment" with Pogue. I'm not proud of manhandling my sweet spotty boy, but desperate times call for desperate measures. No more sweet talk, he couldn't hear it anyway. I fell back on my vet clinic days and restrained that dog with my legs like a wild boar and stuck that syringe far down his throat until the peroxide was drained from the syringe. 30 seconds later he vomited 3 times. An array of ice cream, tripe, peanut butter and one whole Philadelphia Cream Cheese wrapper. Alex of course missed it all so I can be the bad lady who forces things down the puppy's throat. Sigh.

The following days proved to be more battle of wills and humbling as Pogue made it very clear he will not be pilled nor ingest Maalox without a fight. When I ran my pet sitting business people used to hire me for $20 medication visits to come and pill their cats or dogs. I always felt like I was robbing them as it was so simple and I would scoff "what the hell is wrong with these people, it's so easy!" Well, those words came to haunt me as pukey pup (who couldn't have any food the first 24 hours post vomit till his stomach settled) would not take his tummy meds without much theatrics. Howling, whining, spitting pink colored tablets out in my face. In fact I think Pogue is ready for the theater as he acted like a starving sickly waif from a silent movie all weekend. He only wanted me to hold him while wrapped in a soft blanket. He would add a shudder every now and then for effect between snoozing. Alex was booted from the bed Saturday night so Pogue could lay under the covers with me and recuperate.

I'm happy to report today Pogue is back to his old self. Digestion is back in normal working order. Child-lock on garbage cabinet has been adjusted. I will never judge anybody else for not being able to dose something to their animal companion. I have lovely new highlights. I am humble.

Urgent need for FOSTER CARE

This poor dog was seen 5 days in a row by a concerned family just standing alongside a road. They called the humane society in the region of Ohio they live in to take him in and when they passed by the following day he was still standing by the road. Apparently the shelter is full and this sweet guy is around 7 years of age and limping slightly so he would be euthanized if dropped at a pound. Ohio English Setter Rescue is desperate to take this guy in but a foster home is needed. They will cover vetting for this sweet tempered dog and make sure he is placed with a good forever home. The people that took him in have him in a garage and OESR has asked them to please hold off dropping him at the pound so we can try to find a foster.

Okay humans, enough about this Daybright Savings crap, it sounds like a bank name anyway. You can try to explain to me every which way to Sunday the concept and the truth is I don't care. Feed me and feed me when I know I am supposed to be fed, which is more specifically when I want to be fed.

Do dogs wear watches? Hmmm? Do they? No. No they don't. Believe me, if dogs could wear watches those overpriced bastards at The Company of Dogs would create them in every color for every size breed. (you idiots would buy them too, you know you would)

This is not open for negotiating. I don't care if that ticking thing on the wall says 6:00a.m. I goddamn know in my starving gut it is really 7:00a.m. and I want breakfast. Don't play mediator with me offering to split the time down the middle and feeding me at 6:30 till I get used to the time change. This will not happen.

Don't ignore my howling (which is the first clinical sign of dog starvation by the way) by shutting your bedroom door. You are just damn lucky I am arthritic and don't like to climb the stairs in the morning or I would have clawed that damn door. I think my shredding of your decor couch pillow this morning should be message enough that ignoring the situation is not a solution.

So let's summarize. I'm a dog and I am obviously in charge of this household. I don't use clocks. I want food when I want it.

Now get on board goddamn it. Having to explain this hooey to you has really cut into my morning nap time.

Thank you all for the kind and compassionate words, the beautiful flowers, and all the heartfelt wishes this past week. Alex and I are incredibly humbled that in Fiona's name over $300 has been donated to Ohio English Setter Rescue so that other dogs, like our once homeless Fiona can be helped. This is beyond what we could have imagined and are so touched that through this loss some good can come. It is a true testimony to a dog that had such a pure soul, that even in her passing good can still come through in some way. We are fortunate to have our other dogs Dugan, Caelan, Lily and Pogue and our cats Brody and Sully to keep us well loved and comforted this week. They certainly know she is gone and are also mourning, and we are once again reminded of the power and love animals have in our lives but also with each other. In Fiona's memory we will continue to make her collars and keep her name and spirit going. We know that our studio has a beautiful spotty dog angel looking over it and her ashes will be kept there so our Sweet Fee can still watch over all we do.

How do I even begin?

I will try with a simple word of thanks to all who have reached out to us the past 2 days. It has been a great source of comfort for Alex and I to know so many care for us and respect the loss that has occurred within our little family. It helps to have something to hold onto when all feels so hopeless. I have grasped onto all of your words of love and compassion, they mean more than you know.

I have lost things I loved before and it never gets easier. You never become accustomed to having your heart broken. I keep thinking that with age and wisdom I will become a more graceful human, but I am messy. I am in pieces and I hurt. I was so worried about having 5 dogs in the house before adopting Pogue, and now that there is 4 it seems so empty. There are open spaces wherever I look and the feeling of something missing and I wonder how I ever worried about something so silly like a head count of canines under this roof. There could be a hundred dogs here right now and I still am missing one.

We did not know Fiona was sick until Monday. I say that from a clinical standpoint. But in the hindsight that is always clearer, Alex and I both knew. When you live your lives loving your animal companions so deeply, you know when something is off. I had made excuses that were solid, very understandable. I blamed her maturing and slowing down, her ambiguous setter-thyroid, the heat that day, the hyper new puppy in the house causing her to retreat to be by herself. It all looked so fathomable on paper, but in my conscious I knew and I kept my fears deep inside a well of denial. Simply because anything else would cause the pain I am drowning in today.

Our animal companions speak to us in so many ways. While I know it is a privilege to understand them on such a deep level and enjoy the bounty of that understanding, I also have to acknowledge the gift in hearing the truth when you do not want to hear it. The truth behind our beautiful creature's eyes was one of pain, and there was no choice but to relieve her of it. I know some will question that decision, especially with my background and knowledge in veterinary medicine. It is a blessing and a curse to work behind those exam room walls at the vet clinic. With every cure there is a loss and the circle keeps rotating and you jump on and off the ride as long as you can keep your balance. For those that work in animal health care you know of what I speak, you can recognize those around you who should have jumped off the ride long ago, jaded and no longer able to feel. I left the field before I became that, and this is part of that deal. I still feel with every ounce of my being, my blessing and my curse.

Fiona came to us out of nowhere, one of life's most happy surprises. A dog in a poorly run shelter in the middle of acres of farmland, I was only supposed to assess her for adoptability so she could be placed into foster care. Just an informal temperament test, just another volunteer duty. We smelled the facility a half mile before we saw the structure. The shelter staff so untrained they did not know what an English Setter was when I asked to see her. They pointed to a room with a dirt floor and no heat and pens and pens of dogs and told me to see if I could find the setter. I found a setter. Fiona was all a happy setter should be, even in the worst of circumstances. She hopefully licked my fingers through a chain link gate and quickly bewitched Alex with her deep cocoa eyes. While I attempted to "assess" her temperament and give her a mini-health screening, Alex announced we were taking her home forever. I was thinking like a seasoned dog person and my husband as usual was thinking with his heart.

I had to remember to do the same yesterday...to think with my heart. In my head I knew we could start cutting cancer out, do chemo and try to buy time. But ultimately, the time we would be buying would be for ourselves and Fiona deserved more than that. Fiona was most happy when running free and off leash. At our dog park she would bound over the prairie grass effortlessly with that long field setter tongue out the side of her mouth, trying to play catch up with the rest of her. This was how I wanted to remember her, not in a vet hospital with an IV drip.

I brought her home Monday night and brushed her even though she hated being brushed, I always told her she was the face of a collar company and must look her best. I put a brand new collar on her and whispered to her softly how much she was loved and how she will always be our "Sweet Fee" Alex fed her ice cream and we sat with her on the floor and stroked those lovely spotty ears. Yesterday morning the tornado sirens went off at 6:00 a.m. and I awoke to a feeling of dread that had nothing to do with the impending bad weather. I don't remember going to the vet, but we got there. At 9:00a.m. we set her free and I know in her heart, even with a tumor encasing it, she loved us for letting her go, for letting her run free forever. I asked our other dogs that have passed to meet her at the bridge and for my sister Mary, whom Fiona was named in honor of to care for her on the other side.

We will move on slowly from this loss and I am incredibly grateful to all who have contacted us to share their thoughts and love. I am especially humbled by those that have donated to OESR (www.ohioenglishsetterrescue.org) in her name. I hope through these donations, other homeless setters can be as lucky as Fiona was. I did not know how many people and their animals have been influenced however small in life by our dear Fiona. I realize how lucky we are for this.

Finding a little piece of peace in the company of dogs.

This past week has been a nightmare. My husband, my rock, my everything... has been in and out of the hospital and various doctor's offices with diagnosed blood clots, some superficial, one deep. Each day we think we are getting past it and the next day a new clot appears. It's disheartening, it's maddening, it's all consuming. Blood clots are horrible little creatures, they are often hard to find and once you know they are there they are impossible to forget. The treatment is an ever increasing dose of self-injectible blood thinners and in the words of the doctor "Going on with life as you know it." You just hope the body dissolves them and they never return, but alas this is easier said than done. My mind goes to the worse case scenario and I quickly shake it away, but much like the clots themselves the thought is there and impossible to forget...I just wait for time to make my mind slowly dissolve it.

So this week I find myself seeking small pieces of peace in a warm and comfortable place. In the company of the dogs. They sense something is off and do what they do best, love us and make us laugh. After a 7 hour ER visit there is no medicine like watching your puppy navigate the front of his body into a garbage pail then once accomplished look up at you and whine because he is now stuck in said garbage pail and needs help out of it. The dogs stick to Alex like velcro, they sense something is hurting him. If sheer love of setters could cure any ill he would have been healthy days ago. The 5 of them encase Alex wherever he rests, one on his head, one on either side and two grumbling over who lays on his feet. It's a race to see what dogs can get closest to him with Caelan hoping to crawl inside his skin if she was able. It's moments like this I always think of the vet I worked for who said dogs are not capable of emotion. I could prove this theory wrong in moments as I see them congregate around my husband this week, they know, there is little doubt in my mind.

Watching the dogs off leash has long been my anti-depressant. Years ago when we lived in Washington State near a bay I would take our first setter Seamus and our lab Fergus to the water at the end of particularly bad days. Seeing them so happy, paddling around in the setting sun soothed me. I find here in the Midwest the expansive dog park has the same effect. Alex and I walked hand in hand the other day along the prairie grass and late season flowers, the autumn sunlight painting the landscape. The dogs were beyond ecstatic. Leaping over tall brush like bunnies and pointing snouts in the air in a most regal fashion, tapping instincts that have been waiting to explode. It's impossible to feel worry when you are witnessing such pure happiness. It's contagious, it's obvious, it's exactly what we needed.

So things will get better, I am confident. If I took a poll every person out there has a worry, a crisis, a reason to feel hopeless. Until these things leave my world I will just keep turning to the dogs. Unlike most humans I know they will not fail in giving us uninhibited love, devotion and much needed laughter.

I've gotten several Lucky Fiona collars for our three lovely rescue puppies over the past couple of years and am always recommending them to people. I just thought you'd like to see a couple of pictures of how well they work to keep an Elizabethan collar on (really well!). Our poor little pug Maeby had the misfortune of having her eye proptosed last week (such a hazard for pugs - our other dog accidentally chomped her too hard when they were playing). It was a truly horrifying event, of course, and we are still not sure if her eye will be saved, but she is a brave little trooper about it and doesn't seem too phased. We would never let a setter puppy steal your collar off the cutting table and drag it outside through the doggy door. Puppy Love

This is Pogue. He's 5 months old. He's deaf. He's a setter. Formula for mayhem in any typical household.

Except we're not typical.

My husband and I have lived with setters for the last 15 years. We have discovered we are completed jaded by setter hi-jinks. When Pogue jumps into the bathtub and leaps up to steal the loofah hanging on a hook and then looks at us like "Yeah, I got it suckers" our response is to well... giggle.

It's not normal.

So smitten by this breed we have come to know their every move and motive. We will commonly say to each other "well THAT was rather Setterish" or "oh, my that was an A-Plus Setter Move". We so love these dogs that their deviance has become charming. My husband has a very well thought out theory that everybody in a multi-setter household was lured into the lifestyle with a "Sucker Setter". This is an unusually well behaved, serene and perfect dog. 15 years ago we had our dear Seamus. The Irish Setter rescue that never needed a leash, never counter-surfed, was best friends with the cat and never destroyed anything and charmed everyone he met. On his deathbed I searched my mind for one naughty thing he ever did and there was nothing. He was the perfect dog.

So why not rescue another setter? (this is where setter karma bites you on the ass)

Dugan was and is the world's most misbehaved dog. After 10 years with him we are so use to his anticipated naughtiness we have molded our lives around it. We have special doors and knobs to keep him out of places he likes to rampage (like the pantry) We have not left a shoe out or a food item unattended on the counter, stove top or grill since his arrival. He's never going to be leashed trained. Save your breathe. I've been to trainers, vet behaviorists and spent $600 on no-pull training devices. I walked him one summer rain or shine 100 days in a row in an attempt to tame his leash-frenzy. He is 12 years old folks, he still acts like a wild mustang on a leash. My therapist has told me to just accept it and move on with my life.

More setters followed - Caelan the Irish and Fiona the English. Their occasional slight naughty behavior was taken in stride. We worked hard on rewarding them for not following any type of Dugan example. Really nothing they have ever done holds a candle to what we were used to and then the Setter Gods above sent us Lily.

Lily the little pocket setter might as well have had "Sucker Setter" stamped on her forehead. Sweet, demure, tiny and velcroed to my side. She listened when called. She would never take something that was not hers. She sits on the floor in the bedroom and tilts her head as if to say "Perhaps I could join you on the bed? Only if you invite me silly, anything else would be rude!"

So thrilled with Lily we were lured into a state of mind that taking another setter would not be so bad. After all, look at Lily!

Then last week came Pogue, or as we like to call him "Dugan Junior".

He should have rocked our world. But he kind of just rumbled it a bit. He sits next to my Buddha statue in the garden with my dianthus hanging out of his mouth...roots dangling. I laugh and wonder if he is seeking zen. He scales the furniture like a mountain goat and panics when he can't navigate himself off a corner coffee table without dropping the coaster he's gnawing. We snicker and discuss if we should get tile coasters next time we go to Target as they are more durable. We love him.

Underneath all the puppy trouble making is a brilliant dog. He knows his sign language thanks to his incredible foster mom Danica, and is so smart he picks and chooses when he wants to actually acknowledge our frantic fingers signing "no!" His fur is soft and when he cuddles he melts all over you like hot butter. When he gets sleepy and gives your face soft kisses you don't care if he destroys your world like a hurricane. You just feel so in love.

I think underneath it all he may be a "Sucker Setter" too. You just have to look very hard and listen with your heart. Just as he cannot hear we have to tune out some of the naughty too and watch the signs. All signs point to love at this point.

Whenever somebody nay says Facebook I bring up Noel Christeen Thrower. This awesome artisan reconnected through Facebook with my husband. Their initial introduction? Well they went to kindergarten together... IN JAPAN. Yes, both military brats, I think Noel has outgrown the brat part. My husband? Not so much.

Anywho. How cool we re-connected with Noel! Not only is she a dog rescue/humane educating/service dog wielding/animal therapist all-around-swell-gal but she also has her own studio where she creates incredible leather works. * Alex and I did a little road trippin' last weekend and headed down to Benld, Illinois for a home visit for English Setter Rescue. We were so pleased to make that long drive to be able to meet Gloria and talk to her about adopting a setter and providing a forever home. Sure I may have complained it was 4.5 hours of driving each way past nothing but cornfields, and I drove Alex crazy jibber-jabbering in the car the whole way about how can there was nothing but cornfields to look at, but oh it was so worth it.

Not only did Gloria get approved for MacArthur, but she also adopted his former kennel-mate Patton. These two dogs were surrendered in Kentucky with 2 other setters because the former owner no longer wanted to hunt so simply disposed of them like unwanted kitchen appliances. Of the four dogs Ike was first adopted and now Gloria has Mac & Patton! (we still need to find a home for Winston folks! www.ohioenglishsetterrescue.org - click on adoptable dogs)

There were so many people who made this possible - OESR for stepping in to pull all four dogs, dedicated foster homes in different states caring for them and transport volunteers to get them to Gloria. But in the end, all these little acts added up to a happy homecoming. These pictures are of Gloria and MacArthur and Patton meeting yesterday in Indiana before heading home to southern Illinois. My heart is full that these dogs have found such a loving home.

It takes a village to get dogs homes, so do whatever little part you can. This happy rescue story is because many little pieces of the puzzle came together. Why don't you all find a way to be a part of the solution? Rescue, educate, volunteer...care. It's more rewarding than you know.

This is Mr. B.B. Dafoe. He was nameless until the end of the ebay auction (to raise funding for his rescue group) to name him and he looks an awful lot like Oakley- the foster I had before him. He was an owner surrender from Bell county KY and I believe he lived his life on a chain outside until the family gave him up to the shelter for reasons unknown. He is quiet, cuddly, a little unsure, but otherwise great around kids, cats and other dogs. ~ Nikki (a.k.a. Dog in Need of Foster Home ASAP

Transport can be attempted to get Poppy to a potential new foster or hopefully permanent home. This sweet 10 year old gal was pulled from a shelter after being dumped for being "too old to hunt" and left for euthanasia after serving her former owner for years as a hunting dog. She has been in foster ever since and now needs a new home. She has made amazing strides and is a wonderful loving companion who just needs to find the perfect soft place to land.

Carter is the big winner of the Setter Showdown to benefit OESR! $600 was raised for Ohio English Setter Rescue to help pull, vet, groom, feed and transport dogs awaiting their forever homes. Thanks to all for purchasing the Carter and Guiness Collars and Leashes to support such a wonderful cause. Here is the breakdown of Carter vs. Guiness in the ultimate Setter Showdown, it came down to a last minute sale 3 minutes before promotion ended to declare a winner!

Birdie is a Good Egg

Hi Shannon,
I just wanted to send you over a few pictures of Birdie sporting her Lucky Fiona collars.
Birdie is such a busy girl, she's really not happy unless she is working and she loves to be on the go. Of course, when she isn't working enough, she gets bored & decides that taking pots & pans out of the cupboard, hoarding slippers or continually bringing me things she thinks I need are good things to occupy her time. I think Birdie is the only one in my house that constantly manages to get the dirty laundry into the laundry basket. Then again, I think if I gave them treats for hitting the basket, the rest of my family might not miss so often.
Enclosed are pictures of Birdie doing a therapy visit at the nursing home wearing her Clam Bake collar. She received so many compliments about this collar. I'm trying to find some complimenting fabric to make her a doggie dress to match it. Yes. I am that kind of dog owner. But Birdie is such a Diva, she loves wearing her dresses & little costumes when we do therapy visits.
I have to say that I really really love the Butter & Eggfly collar, it compliments her fur color & looks absolutely smashing with her service vest. She has received many many compliments about this collar. She actually pulls it down off of her collar rack when she gets her gear when I tell her to suit up. While they were nuking me in radiology, Birdie was off making her own therapy rounds at the hospital with the orderly who was sitting with her. He told me that she received many compliments on how pretty her collar was. I just found some fabric to compliment this collar so I can make her another outfit for therapy visits.
These collars are really awesome, I've been referring people to you already.

We are stepping up our commitment to Ohio English Setter Rescue (whom we adopted Lily from last October) You may say they are our new "pet project"... pun intended! I have personally never worked with a group that does so much with so little, they work with lots of last hope dogs that are pulled from high kill shelters in terrible health and sometimes victims of abuse.
